a. fill in the historical happenings as they occurred
b. provide the ‘current events’ as supplied by the Aylmer Express articles and
c. catch up on the earlier years of the boys’ lives.
These strategies are offered to enable the reader to understand the letters within the context of the time and to experience the war era as lived by these individuals. Then, in February/March of next year (1915), Murray surfaces and then is joined by Frank in August.
