George John Marks, a young Englishman and for 12 years in the Royal Field Artillery in England, walked 34 miles from Avon, where he is employed as a farm labourer, to London, to enlist for the war as a member of the Sixth Battery. He collapsed from fatigue when he reached London, but, after passing the necessary medical examination, proposed walking back to Avon in order to be at work Monday morning. The recruiting officer, however, saw to it that he didn’t have to walk.

The Imperial Life Assurance Co, European issued a very complete European war map in booklet form. The strength of army and navy of each nation involved and other interesting information is also given. Policyholders may procure a copy free of charge from the local agent, C.S. Bridgman.

The broken glass in the post office clock dial has all been replaced, the hands placed in position and this fine clock is now on full time duty. The bell does not, however, seem to give out the full, round, melodious tone it did at first. Possibly this defect will be remedied.

Several farmers in the vicinity of Aylmer have this week been victimized by a fraud who represents himself as an agent of the Government sent out to buy food supplies for the British troops. His plan is to buy certain commodities and present a cheque for more than the amount of the purchases made, and getting cash for the difference. Several cheques have been presented at the local banks pronounced worthless. Beware of him.
