Parody composed by one of our townsman, F.S. Fansher, for the benefit of our boys with the Second Contingent.
An Aylmer boy went fighting;
For the Honor of his King,
It filled his heart with gladness
When he heard the soldiers sing;
Some sang of Tipperary
And London-Town as well,
Till the Aylmer boy went crazy,
And started out to yell.
CHORUS
It’s a long way back to Aylmer,
Its’ a long way to go;
It’s along way back to Aylmer,
To the sweetest girl I know
I don’t think much of St. Thomas
Or of the Houghton Fair,
I’ve got a little chicken back in Aylmer
And my heart’s right there.
The Germans heard him yelling,
And they dropped their guns in fear,
And said, “Mein Gott in Heaven,
Vy, the devil must be here;’
They started back to Germany
The Kaiser for to tell,
And the Aylmer boy he chased them
And at every jump he’d yell.
The Kaiser saw them coming,
And he leaped up from his bed
And when he heard their story,
Why the Kaiser he dropped dead;
Of course the war was over
And the armies all did cheer,
But the Aylmer boy kept yelling,
In a voice both loud and clear.
