Saturday’s reports from the front intimated that the Germans had made further progress towards Paris but with heavy losses. It is claimed that 100,000 Germans have been killed and 400,000 wounded. 700 British troops held off 5,000 Germans for three hours at Tournai, with stubborn resistance and brilliant tactics. Only 300 of the British survived, and these stood their ground until all hope of reinforcements expected was lost, when they retired calmly and coolly, carrying their wounded.

India most anxious to assist Britain in every way, and has sent large sums of money to the relief fund. In addition native troops are on their way to join the British army, and as they are fierce and brave fighters, they will give a good account of themselves.

The Daily Mail editorial concerning the concentration of Germans in great strength to crush the British force, says: "Germany has brought the stupendous odds of 3:1 against the British soldiers, of whom we may feel proud, but the situation is critical. France has done everything in her power; Russia cannot help except by indirect pressure. Great Britain alone can find more men and find them she must. The nation must prepare on a colossal scale and must send every man and gun that can be spared here and now, to the decisive point in France.”

France has submitted to the United Sates and other neutral governments a sworn statement that after the engagement at Mons, a German officer fire on three Red Cross nurses, killing two and wounding third. Marcelle Jouy, a nurse, who was found wounded, swore that after the battle on Aug 15, she was attending the wounded with two other nurses, when a German officer opened fire on them from a distance of thirty feet. The bullet shattered her arm and she fainted. On recovering consciousness she found her two companions dead beside her. All three nurses plainly wore the insignia of the Red Cross

If necessary Russia can put twenty millions of men in the field. “On to Berlin,” is still the Russian cry, and they approach the German capital making satisfactory progress day by day.

The London Chronicle correspondent at Ostend wires: “I heard by chance one of the most shocking stories of German ferocity that so far has been authenticated. In a tobacconist shop I found a girl behind the counter crying bitterly. She told me her sister had just arrived for Liege. A party of German brutes had billeted at the house of the girls’ mother. The grey-haired old woman had done her best for the soldiers and when they were leaving they pretended to be grateful to her and one of them extended his hand as if to shake hands with her, but at the same moment as she put forth her hand, another German beside her raised a sword and hacked the poor old woman’s hand off at the wrist.”

In four days of desperate fighting the British loss was between 5,000 and 6,000. The vacancy in the ranks was at once made up by reinforcements, and the condition and spirits of the British troops are excellent.

Over 80 suspects, Austrian and German, picked up during the past five weeks in Montreal and vicinity, have been taken to Kingston in Fort Henry for safe keeping.

One hundred and sixty railway trains loaded with 40,000 German soldiers have passed through Belgium from the northeast. This, it is added, indicates that the Germans are sending troops back on account of the Russian advance. The German force at Brussels has been reduced to a minimum. These 160 trains are transporting one army corps with full equipment, and it would appear that the rapid advance of the Russians is compelling the Germans to withdraw the troops from the line of the Mense.

As evidence of the loyalty of the Germans in Berlin, Ont., to the British empire, many merchants are offering subscriptions of $100 each, and the council may give $10,000.

The German cruiser Leipzig, which had proven so elusive in northern Pacific waters, has, it is claimed, been at last capture, the French cruiser, Montcalm and the Canadian cruiser, Rainbow, accomplished the trick. The report has not been confirmed.

The supremacy of British navy is being maintained. A strong force of destroyers out on a scouting movement, with commendable strategy, lured the Germans to the open sea off Heligoland, and sunk 11 boats. The superiority of the British gunpowder and strength was amply demonstrated.

A despatch from London yesterday says that the Austrian defeat by the Russians in Galacia was colossal. The Austrians loss being estimated at 20,000 and 20,000 prisoners.

Another big battle is evidently about to take place on the Belgian border. The French have selected their battle field. Some 3,000,000 men will be engaged. Every day adds to the strength of the allies. New troops constantly joining them.

Ottawa, Sept 1 – The government issued the following official statement to the press this evening: “It is essential that no report should be published in the press giving information as to the sailing of vessels out of Canadian ports or as to the movement of Canadian forces. The publication of such information is not only undesirable but dangerous and might result in serious loss to life and property. As strong intimation as to the importance of silence on this subject has been received from the imperial authorities. If the press fail to comply with this official request prompt and effective steps will be taken to enforce its observance.

About 8,000 men will be left behind at Valcartier, to form the nucleus of second contingent. The second 100,000 British recruits are fast enrolling. The first 100,000 have already gone into training.

News for the past two days has been very meagre, the censorship having been suddenly tightened. This is taken to mean that the British troops contemplate an attack upon the Germans from Ostend.
