As a misapprehension appears to exist in regard to the various sums of money recently raised in Aylmer in aid of the war fund. A brief sketch as to the work done may not be out of place. The first appeal brought in the sum of $130.50 to Mr Wm. Warnock, in response to the call of the daughters of the Empire to equip a hospital ship. Upon request of the British Admiralty this fund was placed for further hospital equipment.
The Ladies Institute then took up the work, collectors being appointed to make a house to house canvas of the town which resulted in subscriptions to the amount of $150. In addition to this a garden party on the lawn of Dr Backus yielded the splendid sum of $150 from gate receipts and sale from booths. The net proceeds of the Gem and Star theatres for one evening’s performance, which was kindly donated by the proprietors, Mr Shierholtz and Mr Reavely, added $57.40 to the sum, making a grand total of $487.90; a record of which Aylmer has no cause to feel ashamed. With the proceeds of the lawn party the Institute Ladies are purchasing materials and making up the various supplies asked for by the Red Cross Society, sheets, pillows and cases for same, socks woollen shirts, etc., and dozens of women in and around Aylmer are busily engaged in this work. All those wishing to assist in knitting or sewing, please communicate with Mrs K.J. McLennan, Mrs. M. Griffin, or Dr. A. Backus. The ladies also wish to thank all those who so kindly helped with the good work. The fund is still open and donations will be thankfully received.
The Travel Club is especially devoting their efforts toward the making up a bolt of cotton into pillow cases, but are especially devoting their efforts toward the making of knitted and flannel cholera belts, providing the yarn for the knitters, when so desired. Some 50 women are at present making these almost indispensable health bands. Anyone willing to assist, whether a member of the Club or not, can communicate with Mrs. J.M. Wrong or Miss Lewis.
Aylmer is doing nobly. Let it be “a long pull and a strong pull and a pull together,” in the way we back our brave soldiers lads as they go to the aid of the motherland in this time of need and dire extremity.
